Question 1

Is there an entry fee for Franz Josef Glacier?

Accepted Answer

The 1.7 km Glacier Valley Walk is completely free. You only pay for parking at the trailhead, which costs $2.50 per half hour or $20 for the day. Bring a card, because the machines do not accept cash.

Question 2

Can you walk right up to the glacier ice?

Accepted Answer

No. The Waiho River cut off foot access up the valley, so the public track ends at a viewpoint. To actually walk on the ice, you have to book a guided helicopter hike, which starts around NZ$529.

Question 3

How long does the Franz Josef Glacier walk take?

Accepted Answer

Budget about 1.5 to 2 hours for the round trip. The track itself takes roughly 30 minutes each way. That leaves plenty of time to take photos at the viewpoint before heading back.

Question 4

How far is Franz Josef from Queenstown?

Accepted Answer

The drive is 350 km and takes about 5 hours with stops via State Highway 6. You cross the Haast Pass along the edge of Mount Aspiring National Park. Daily direct buses also run this route, taking roughly 8.5 hours.

Question 5

Is the glacier walk wheelchair accessible?

Accepted Answer

Only the first section through the rainforest is flat enough for wheelchairs and strollers. The final approach to the viewpoint involves a short, steep uphill climb that is not accessible. Wheelchair users can book specialist helicopter operators to land directly on the ice instead.

Question 6

What should I pack for the glacier walk?

Accepted Answer

Wear warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy walking shoes, as the valley weather changes rapidly and the track gets wet. Bring drinking water, sun protection, and insect repellent to deal with West Coast sandflies.

Question 7

What is the best month to visit Franz Josef Glacier?

Accepted Answer

Go in winter (June through August) for fewer crowds and the best ice caves. Colder temperatures slow the glacier's meltwater, making the ice formations much more stable for guided hikes. Summer (November to February) brings the warmest weather but the highest accommodation prices.

Question 8

Can I fly a drone at Franz Josef Glacier?

Accepted Answer

No, you cannot fly a drone anywhere in the valley without prior authorization. The area is public conservation land, meaning you need a specific permit from the Department of Conservation before launching.
